Disclosed are ionomers of co-polymers of vinylidene substituted aromatic monomers and unsaturated compounds containing acid groups crosslinked by the residue of one or more metal salts and/or metal oxides of a metal having a valence of 2 or greater. The crosslinks are reversible and the weight average molecular weight of the copolymer of one or more vinylidene aromatic monomers and one or more unsaturated acids may be substantially the same after the crosslinking is reversed as it is before crosslinking. A portion of the chains of the copolymer of one or more vinylidene aromatic monomers and one or more unsaturated acids are crosslinked with other chains of the copolymer of one or more vinylidene aromatic monomers and one or more unsaturated acids. Disclosed are compositions of co-polymers of vinylidene substituted aromatic monomers and unsaturated compounds containing acid groups and one or more metal salts and/or metal oxides of a metal having a valence of 2 or greater that when contacted form ionomers. Disclosed are methods of preparing such ionomers.

L'invention concerne des ionomères de copolymères de monomères aromatiques substitués par du vinylidène et de composés insaturés contenant des groupes acides réticulés par le résidu d'un ou plusieurs sels métalliques et/ou oxydes métalliques d'un métal présentant une valence égale ou supérieure à 2. Les liaisons réticulaires sont réversibles et le poids moléculaire moyen en poids du copolymère d'un ou de plusieurs monomères aromatiques de vinylidène et d'un ou plusieurs acides insaturés peut être sensiblement le même après réversion de la réticulation qu'avant réticulation. Une partie des chaînes du copolymère d'un ou plusieurs monomères aromatiques de vinylidène et d'un ou plusieurs acides insaturés sont réticulées avec d'autres chaînes du copolymère d'un ou plusieurs monomères aromatiques de vinylidène et d'un ou plusieurs acides insaturés. L'invention concerne des compositions de copolymères de monomères aromatiques substitués par du vinylidène et de composés insaturés contenant des groupes acides et un ou plusieurs sels métalliques et/ou oxydes métalliques d'un métal présentant une valence égale ou supérieure à 2 qui, une fois en contact, forment des ionomères. La présente invention concerne des procédés de préparation de tels ionomères.
