Techniques for video encoding and decoding are described. One example method of video processing includes determining a pruning rule for a history based motion vector prediction (HMVP) candidate derived from one or multiple HMVP tables; performing pruning or skipping the pruning of the HMVP candidate based on the pruning rule, the pruning being applied to determine whether to insert the HMVP candidate into a final candidate list for a current block; and performing a video processing on the current block based on the final candidate list, the HMVP candidate being classified into one of a plurality of categories, and the pruning rule being determined based on the category into which the HMVP candidate is classified

L'invention concerne des techniques de codage et de décodage vidéo. Un procédé de traitement vidéo donné à titre d'exemple consiste à déterminer une règle d'élagage pour un candidat de prédiction de vecteur de mouvement basée sur l'historique (HMVP) dérivé d'une ou de plusieurs tables HMVP ; à réaliser un élagage ou à sauter l'élagage du candidat HMVP sur la base de la règle d'élagage, l'élagage étant appliqué pour déterminer s'il faut insérer le candidat HMVP dans une liste de candidats finale pour un bloc actuel ; et à réaliser un traitement vidéo sur le bloc actuel sur la base de la liste de candidats finale, le candidat HMVP étant classé dans une catégorie parmi une pluralité de catégories, et la règle d'élagage étant déterminée sur la base de la catégorie dans laquelle le candidat HMVP est classé.
