There is described an apparatus for testing whether a fiber optic monitoring system is functioning properly. The apparatus includes an enclosure comprising one or more apertures for receiving therethrough optical fiber; and one or more actuators sealed within the enclosure for generating one or more interference signals for interfering with optical fiber within the enclosure such that an optical path length of the optical fiber is altered. There is also described a method for verifying an event detection system, comprising: interrogating optical fiber positioned alongside a conduit by sending one or more light pulses along the optical fiber and receiving reflections of the one or more light pulses; and using a event verification device housed within an enclosure through which passes the optical fiber to generate one or more interference signals for interfering with the optical fiber such that an optical path length of the optical fiber is altered.

L'invention concerne un appareil servant à tester le fonctionnement correct d'un système de surveillance de fibre optique. L'appareil selon l'invention comprend une enceinte comportant au moins une ouverture destinée à recevoir une fibre optique ; et au moins un actionneur scellé à l'intérieur de l'enceinte pour générer au moins un signal d'interférence pour interférer avec la fibre optique à l'intérieur de l'enceinte, de sorte qu'une longueur de trajet optique de la fibre optique soit modifiée. L'invention concerne également un procédé de vérification d'un système de détection d'événement, consistant : à interroger une fibre optique disposée le long d'un conduit par l'envoi d'au moins une impulsion de lumière le long de la fibre optique et la réception de réflexions de ladite impulsion de lumière au moins ; et à utiliser un dispositif de vérification d'événement logé à l'intérieur d'une enceinte à travers laquelle passe la fibre optique afin de générer au moins un signal d'interférence destiné à interférer avec la fibre optique, de sorte qu'une longueur de trajet optique de la fibre optique soit modifiée.
