CLAIMS

1. An apparatus for seeding soil, comprising

a soil-sensing arrangement;

a seed-delivery mechanism;

the soil-sensing arrangement comprising one or more soil-sensing elements, each of the one or more soil-sensing elements being configured to sense one or more conditions of the soil; and the one or more soil-sensing elements being integrated with one or more soil-sensing tines.

2. Apparatus of claim 1 wherein the seed-delivery mechanism is responsive, to the soil-sensing arrangement, to deliver at least most of the seed to locally optimised depth.

3. Apparatus of claim 1 or 2 wherein the soil-sensing arrangement is configured to, at least periodically, sense at two or more depths at mutually differing proximities to the locally-optimised depth to provide an indication of a local soil condition profile.

4. An apparatus for seeding soil, comprising

a soil-sensing arrangement;

a seed-delivery mechanism configured to respond to the soil-sensing arrangement;

the soil-sensing arrangement comprising one or more soil-sensing elements, each of the one or more soil-sensing elements being configured to sense one or more conditions of the soil;

the seed-delivery mechanism being responsive to the soil-sensing arrangement to deliver at least most of the seed to locally-optimised depth; and the soil-sensing arrangement being configured to, at least periodically, sense at two or more depths at mutually-differing proximities to the locally-optimised depth.

5. Apparatus of claim 3 or 4 comprising two or more of the soil-sensing elements arranged to sense at mutually differing depths.

6. Apparatus of claim 3, 4 or 5 wherein at least one of the one or more soil

sensing elements has sensing portions spaced to sense at differing depths.

7. Apparatus of any one of claims 3 to 6 wherein the soil-sensing arrangement is configured to at least periodically move at least one of the one or more soil sensing elements to differing depths.

8. Apparatus of any one of claims 3 to 6 wherein the soil-sensing arrangement is configured to at least periodically move, at least one of the one or more soil sensing elements to differing depths, in response to one or more conditions of the soil.

9. Apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 8 wherein at least one of the one or more soil-sensing elements is arranged to be a leading soil-engaging element.

10. Apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 9 wherein at least one of the one or more soil-sensing elements is shaped to pull down when moved horizontally through the soil.

11. Apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 10 comprising at least one seed outlet fixed relative to at least one of the one or more soil-sensing elements.

12. Apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 11 wherein the seed-delivery mechanism is responsive, to the soil-sensing arrangement, to vary a seeding rate.

13. Apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 12 wherein the one or more soil

conditions comprise soil moisture.

14. Apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 13 wherein the seed-delivery mechanism is responsive to input indicative of a drag on at least one soil-engaging element.

15. Apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 13 wherein the seed-delivery mechanism is responsive to input indicative of a drag on at least one of the one or more soil-sensing elements.

16. An apparatus for delivering matter to soil, comprising one or more soil- engaging elements; and a mechanism for monitoring a drag on at least one of the one or more soil engaging elements.

17. Apparatus of claim 16 wherein the mechanism for monitoring a drag

comprises a strain gauge and/or a load cell.

18. A method, of assessing a condition of soil, comprising moving one or more elements through the soil and monitoring a drag on the one or more elements.

19. A method, of delivering material to soil, comprising delivering the material to a locally-optimised depth; and at least periodically sensing, one or more conditions of the soil, at two or more depths at mutually differing proximities to the locally-optimised depth.
