Systems and methods are provided for operating molten carbonate fuel cells to allow for periodic regeneration of the fuel cells while performing elevated C02 capture, In some aspects, periodic regeneration can be achieved by shifting the location within the fuel cells where the highest density of alternative ion transport is occurring. Such a shift can result in a new location having a highest density of alternative ion transport, while the previous location can primarily transport carbonate ions. Additionally or alternately, periodic regeneration can be performed by modifying the input flows to the fuel cell and/or relaxing the operating conditions of the fuel cell to reduce or minimize the amount of alternative ion transport.

L'invention concerne des systèmes et des procédés destinés à faire fonctionner des piles à combustible à carbonate fondu afin de permettre une régénération périodique des piles à combustible tout en effectuant une capture de CO2 élevée. Dans certains aspects, une régénération périodique peut être obtenue en décalant l'emplacement à l'intérieur des piles à combustible où la densité la plus élevée d'un transport d'ions alternatifs se produit. Un tel décalage peut conduire à un nouvel emplacement ayant une densité la plus élevée d'un transport d'ions alternatifs, tandis que l'emplacement précédent peut principalement transporter des ions carbonate. En outre ou en variante, une régénération périodique peut être effectuée en modifiant les flux d'entrée vers la pile à combustible et/ou en assouplissant les conditions de fonctionnement de la pile à combustible afin de diminuer ou de réduire au minimum la quantité de transport d'ions alternatifs.
