Ion exchange membranes materials according to the present disclosure exhibit improved conductivity at low and intermediate relative humidity without sacrificing mechanical strength. Polymers are provided that include a backbone with one or more aryl groups, a halocarbyl group, and a halocarbyl side chain attached to the backbone, wherein the halocarbyl side chain includes a halide separated from the backbone by a hydrocarbyl chain, a hydrocarbyl ring, or combinations thereof. The halide is substituted with a tertiary amine and halide anions are then exchanged with hydroxide anions. The polymers are then contacted with phosphoric acid, which is deprotonated by the hydroxide ions, forming anions which enhance interactions with adjacent quaternary ammonium groups and induce excess phosphoric acid molecules to cluster around those quaternary ammonium groups. The membranes exhibit negligible dopant leaching even at high relative humidity.

La présente invention concerne des matériaux de membranes d’échange d’ions qui présentent une conductivité améliorée à humidité relative faible et intermédiaire sans sacrifier la résistance mécanique. L’invention concerne des polymères qui incluent un squelette avec un ou plusieurs groupes aryle, un groupe halogénocarbyle, et une chaîne latérale halogénocarbyle fixés au squelette, la chaîne latérale halogénocarbyle incluant un halogénure séparé du squelette par une chaîne hydrocarbyle, un anneau hydrocarbyle, ou leurs combinaisons. L’halogénure est substitué par une amine tertiaire et des anions halogénure sont alors échangés avec des anions hydroxydes. Les polymères sont alors mis en contact avec de l’acide phosphorique, lequel est déprotoné par les ions hydroxyde, formant des anions qui renforcent les interactions avec les groupes ammonium quaternaires adjacents et induisent l’agrégation des molécules d’acide phosphorique en excès autour de ces groupes ammonium quaternaires. Les membranes présentent une lixiviation de dopant négligeable même à une humidité relative élevée.
