CLAIMS

1. An optical sensor device, comprising:

an application module for applying an irregular pattern of marks to a surface of a medium; and

an optical detector module for acquiring images of the applied marks and for determining an advancement speed of the medium based on the acquired images.

2. The optical sensor device according to claim 1 , wherein multiple application modules are provided to apply multiple patterns of marks to the surface.

3. The optical sensor device according to claim 2, wherein the multiple application modules are positioned such that the patterns of marks generated by the multiple application modules are spaced in a direction that is substantially perpendicular to the advancement direction of the medium.

4. The optical sensor device according to claim 1 , wherein the irregular patter of marks comprises marks with a variation of different shapes.

5. The optical sensor device according to claim 1 , wherein the irregular pattern of marks comprises a variation of distances between adjacent marks.

6. The optical sensor device, according to claim 1 , wherein the application module comprises a reservoir and an application device that is in contact with marking fluid provided in the reservoir and with the medium.

7. The optical sensor device according to claim 6, wherein the application device comprises a starwheel, which is pivot-mounted in a position wherein it is partially submerged in the marking fluid in the reservoir.

8. The optical sensor device according to claim 7 wherein an axis of rotation of the starwheel is resiliently movable in a direction substantially perpendicular to the advancement direction of the medium.

9. The optical sensor device according to claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the applied marks is smaller than 0.2 mm.

10. Print apparatus, comprising:

a print head to apply print content onto a printable medium;

a medium transport mechanism to support and advance the medium; and an optical sensor device, comprising:

an application module for applying an irregular pattern of marks to a surface of a medium; and

an optical detector module for acquiring images of the applied marks and for determining the advancement speed of the medium based on the acquired images.

11. Print apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the medium transport mechanism comprises a printer platen, and wherein the application module and the optical detector module are positioned in depressions formed in the printer platen.

Print apparatus according to claim 10, wherein the print head is a page-wide print head, and wherein the optical sensor device detects a movement of the medium in a direction parallel to the advancement direction of the medium, as well as in a direction perpendicular to the advancement direction of the medium.

13. Method, comprising:

applying an irregular pattern of marks to a surface of the medium;

acquiring images of the applied marks using an optical sensor; and

determining the advancement speed of the medium based on the acquired images.

14. Method according to claim 13. wherein applying the irregular pattern of marks to the surface of the medium comprises applying multiple marks wherein the shapes of the marks vary in an irregular manner.

15. Method according to claim 13. wherein applying the irregular pattern of marks to the surface of the medium comprises applying multiple marks wherein the distances between adjacent marks vary in an irregular manner.
