This absolute encoder is provided with a first drive gear (worm gear section 1d) which rotates as a main shaft rotates, a first driven gear (worm wheel section 2a) which meshes with the first drive gear, a second drive gear (worm gear section 2b) which is provided coaxially with the first driven gear and which rotates as the first driven gear rotates, a second driven gear which, in a plan view, is provided on the opposite side of the first driven gear and the second drive gear from the first drive gear and which meshes with the second drive gear, and an angle sensor which detects the angle of rotation of a rotating body which rotates as the second driven gear rotates.
