Claims

1 . A battery tray of a battery assembly, comprising one receptacle row or a plurality of receptacle rows, wherein the or each receptacle row comprises a plurality of battery receptacles for holding a corresponding plurality of batteries, and the battery receptacles forming a receptacle row are disposed in a row having a row axis and extend along a row direction parallel to the row axis; wherein the battery receptacle has a battery compartment and a receptacle axis orthogonal to the row axis; and wherein the battery receptacle comprises a first portion which is a top portion having a top end, a second portion which is a base portion having a bottom end and a peripheral portion extending between the first portion and the second portion and surrounding the receptacle axis to define the battery compartment; and wherein one conductor passageway or a plurality of conductor passage ways is formed on the peripheral portion, the or each conductor passageway is formed on the peripheral portion and extends in a direction parallel to the row axis and offset therefrom.

2. The battery tray of claim 1 , wherein the conductor passageway extends from the top end of the battery receptacle towards the base portion in an axial direction for an axial length, the axial direction being parallel to the receptacle axis.

3. The battery tray of claims 1 or 2, wherein the conductor passageway has an entry aperture on the top end of the battery receptacle, and wherein the conductor passageway has a closed end at an axial level which is intermediate the top end and the bottom end of the battery receptacle.

4. The battery tray according to any preceding claim, wherein the conductor passageway is parallel to and offset from the receptacle axis, and wherein the open end is to permit closely- fitted entry of a conductive strip into the conductor passageway.

The battery tray according to any preceding claim, wherein a first slit portion and a second slit portion cooperate to define the conductor passageway, and wherein the first slit portion and the second slit portion are on the peripheral portion of the battery receptacle and are parallel to the receptacle axis.

The battery tray of claim 5, wherein the first slit portion has a first slit axis parallel to the receptacle axis and the second slit portion has a second slit axis parallel to the first slit axis; and wherein the first slit axis and the second slit axis cooperate to define a slit plane which is parallel to the row axis.

7. The battery tray according to any preceding claim, wherein the battery receptacle comprises a plurality of stays which defines the conductor passageway, and wherein each one of the stays has a stay axis which is parallel to the receptacle axis.

The battery tray of claim 7, wherein the plurality of stays comprises a first stay having a first stay axis, a second stay having a second stay axis parallel to the first stay axis, and a third stay which is immediate the first stay and the second stay and having a third stay axis parallel to the first stay axis; wherein the first stay and the second stay cooperate to define a first slit portion and the second stay and the third stay cooperate to define a second slit portion; and wherein the first slit portion and the second slit portion cooperate to define the conductor passageway.

The battery tray according to any preceding claim, wherein the peripheral portion comprises a peripheral wall which surrounds the battery compartment; wherein the peripheral wall comprises a first sidewall portion which is on a first side of the row axis and a second sidewall portion which is on a second side of the row axis; and wherein the first sidewall portion and the second sidewall portion are on opposite sides of the row axis such that the row axis is intermediate the first sidewall portion and the second sidewall portion.

The battery tray of claim 9, wherein the peripheral portion comprises a plurality of fins, the fins extending inwardly from the peripheral wall and cooperating to define outer boundary of the battery compartment such that the outer boundary of the battery compartment is spaced apart from the peripheral wall to define a circumferential air gap between a battery received inside the battery receptacle and the peripheral wall.

1 1 . The battery tray of any preceding claim, wherein the receptacle axes of battery receptacles on a receptacle row are aligned on the row axis.

12. The battery tray of any preceding claim, comprising a first receptacle row and a second receptacle row, wherein the first receptacle row and the second receptacle row share a common row wall portion, and wherein the peripheral portions of the battery receptacles of the first receptacle and the peripheral portions of the battery receptacles of the second receptacle row cooperate to form the common row wall portion.

13. The battery tray of claim 12, wherein the conductor passageway on a battery receptacle of the first receptacle row extends through the peripheral portion of a battery receptacle on the second receptacle row.

The battery tray of claims 12 or 13, wherein a battery receptacle of the first receptacle row is in abutment with two battery receptacles of the second receptacle row, and/or wherein a battery receptacle of the second receptacle row is in abutment with two battery receptacles of the first receptacle row

The battery tray according to any of claims 12 to 14, wherein the conductor passageway on a battery receptacle of the first receptacle row is defined by the peripheral portions of two abutting battery receptacles of the second receptacle row; and/or wherein the conductor passageway on a battery receptacle of the second receptacle row is defined by the peripheral portions of two abutting battery receptacles of the first receptacle row.

The battery tray according to any of claims 12 to 15, comprising a third receptacle row which is in abutment with the second receptacle row such that the second receptacle row is intermediate the first receptacle row and the third receptacle row, wherein the conductor passageways of battery receptacles of the first receptacle row extends and passes through the second receptacle row and the conductor passageways of battery receptacles of the second receptacle row extends and passes through the third receptacle row.

The battery tray according to any of claims 12 to 16, comprising a third receptacle row which is in abutment with the second receptacle row such that the second receptacle row is intermediate the first receptacle row and the third receptacle row, wherein a receptacle row has a first row-end defined by a first battery receptacle of the first receptacle row and a second row-end defined by a last battery receptacle of the first receptacle row; and wherein the peripheral portions of the battery receptacles on the first row ends of the first, second and third receptacle row cooperate to define an axial half of a battery receptacle.

The battery tray of claim 17, wherein a receptacle row has a second battery receptacle in abutment with the first battery receptacle and a second-last battery receptacle in abutment with last battery receptacle; wherein the first and second battery receptacle of the first receptacle row cooperate to define the conductor passageway of the first battery receptacle of the second receptacle row and wherein the last and last-second battery receptacles of the second receptacle row cooperate to define the conductor passageway of the last battery receptacle of the first receptacle row.

The battery tray of any preceding claim, wherein the peripheral portion comprises a third sidewall portion; and wherein the third sidewall portion comprises an axial protrusion and an axial slit portion which is axially aligned with the axial protrusion and which continues from the axial protrusion which intercepts the row axis, the row axis being a center axis of the receptacle row.

20. The battery tray according to any preceding claim, wherein the tray is integrally molded as a single piece.

21 . A battery assembly comprising a battery tray according to any preceding claim and a plurality of batteries arranged into a plurality of battery rows on the tray, wherein batteries of a battery row are in parallel connection and adjacent battery rows are connected in series, wherein a pair of adjacent battery rows are connected by an interrow connector, and wherein the interrow connector comprises a metal grating which interconnects first battery terminals of one battery row and second battery terminals of an adjacent battery row, the first battery terminal and the second battery terminal being battery terminals of opposite electrical polarity.

22. A battery assembly according to claim 21 , wherein the interrow connector is received inside and extends through the battery row and the adjacent battery row.

23. A battery assembly according to claims 21 or 22, wherein the interrow connector is flexible and integrally formed from a sheet metal.
