Systems and methods for the manufacture of an hourglass shaped stent-graft assembly comprising an hourglass shaped stent, graft layers, and an assembly mandrel having an hourglass shaped mandrel portion. Hourglass shaped stent may have superelastic and self-expanding properties. Hourglass shaped stent may be encapsulated using hourglass shaped mandrel assembly coupled to a dilation mandrel used for depositing graft layers upon hourglass shaped mandrel assembly. Hourglass shaped mandrel assembly may have removably coupled conical portions. The stent-graft assembly may be compressed and heated to form a monolithic layer of biocompatible material. Encapsulated hourglass shaped stents may be used to treat subjects suffering from heart failure by implanting the encapsulated stent securely in the atrial septum to allow blood flow from the left atrium to the right atrium when blood pressure in the left atrium exceeds that on the right atrium. The encapsulated stents may also be used to treat pulmonary hypertension.

La présente invention concerne des systèmes et des procédés pour la fabrication d’un ensemble stent-greffon en forme de sablier comprenant un stent en forme de sablier, des couches de greffe, et un mandrin d’assemblage ayant une partie de mandrin en forme de sablier. Le stent en forme de sablier peut présenter des propriétés superélastiques et auto-expansibles. Le stent en forme de sablier peut être encapsulé au moyen de l’ensemble de mandrin en forme de sablier couplé à un mandrin de dilatation utilisé pour déposer des couches de greffe sur l’ensemble de mandrin en forme de sablier. L’ensemble de mandrin en forme de sablier peut comporter des parties coniques couplées de façon amovible. L’ensemble stent-greffon peut être comprimé et chauffé pour former une couche monolithique de matériau biocompatible. Les stents en forme de sablier encapsulés peuvent être utilisés pour traiter des sujets souffrant d’insuffisance cardiaque par implantation du stent encapsulé de façon fixe dans le septum auriculaire pour permettre l’écoulement de sang de l’oreillette gauche vers l’oreillette droite lorsque la pression artérielle dans l’oreillette gauche dépasse celle de l’oreillette droite. Les stents encapsulés peuvent également être utilisés pour traiter l’hypertension pulmonaire.
