Claims

1. Apparatus for laminar liquid cooling for ultrasonic fatigue tests of a sample material, characterized by the fact that it comprises an ultrasonic transducer (1) on which a test sample (2) made of the sample material is mounted and in that a cooling fluid (4) is supplied to the test sample (2) through a nozzle (3) of a defined shape in order to form a continuous liquid film (5) on the surface of at least part of the test sample (2).

Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the nozzle (3) is formed and located in respect to the test sample (2) such that the continuous liquid film (5) on the surface of at least part of the test sample (2) is formed due to the gravitational force (6) acting on the cooling fluid (4) supplied to the test sample (2).

3. Apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the test sample (2) has a longitudinal extension and that the test sample (2) is located in the apparatus with the longitudinal extension running essentially in a vertical direction.

4. Apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the nozzle (3) is located at the top of a test portion (7) of the test sample (2), the test portion (7) comprising a centra! portion, where during a fatigue test a mechanical deformation may occur.

Apparatus according to claim 3 or 4, wherein a shape of a nozzle hole of the nozzle (3) corresponds to the form of an external surface of a transverse section transverse to the longitudinal extension of the test sample (2), wherein an inside width of the nozzle hole is larger than the width of the transverse section of the test sample (2).

6. Apparatus according to any of the claims 3 to 5, wherein with the transverse section of the test sample (2) being circular, the nozzle hole has a circular cross section.

7. Apparatus according to any of the claims 3 to 6, wherein a diameter of the nozzle hole is at least twice a gauge diameter of the test sample (2).

8. Method for laminar liquid cooling for ultrasonic fatigue testing of a sample material by an apparatus according to one of the preceding claims, characterized by the fact that the cooling liquid (4) flowing through the nozzle (3) flows over the external surface of a test portion (7) of the test sample (2) by means of a laminar flow in a direction of a gravitational force (6) and removes heat generated by mechanical deformation of the test sample (2) in a central portion of the test portion (7) due to the ultrasonic fatigue testing.

The method for laminar liquid cooling for ultrasonic fatigue testing of a material according to claim 8, wherein if due to the mechanical deformation of the test sample (2) in the central portion of the test portion (7), the liquid film (5) is torn in the middle of the test portion (7) of the test sample (2), the cooling liquid’s (4) own momentum transfers a volume of the remaining cooling liquid (4) out of the central portion of the test sample (2) in the direction of the gravitational force (6), and an implosion of the liquid film (5) occurs outside of a critical location for initiation of a fatigue crack.
