CLAIMS

1. A door closer including:

a body defining a chamber therein, said chamber having first and second ends and supporting therein;

a first piston;

a second piston; and

a biasing device,

wherein the first piston, second piston and biasing device are positioned in that order and wherein the first piston is positioned adjacent or near the first end of the chamber and wherein the biasing device is positioned adjacent or near the second end of the chamber,

wherein the biasing device is capable of biasing the second piston towards the first piston, and

wherein the second piston prevents the passage of fluid therethrough or therepast.

2. A door closer according to claim 1 wherein the second piston includes a seal for sealing the second piston against an interior surface of the chamber.

3. A door closer according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the second piston includes a formation which engages with the biasing member.

4. A door closer according to any preceding claim wherein the position of the first piston and second piston define first, second and third cavities within the chamber, with:

the first cavity being defined between a first end of the first piston and a first end of the body;

the second cavity being defined between a second end of the first piston and the second piston; and

the third cavity being defined between the second piston and a second end of the body.

5. A door closer according to claim 4 wherein the first and second ends of the body are opposite each other.

6. A door closer according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein the biasing device is positioned within the third cavity.

7. A door closer according to claim 4, 5 or 6 wherein the second end of the first piston includes a first passage for permitting the flow of fluid therethrough from and to a second cavity.

8. A door closer according to claim 7 wherein the door closer includes a fluid flow restricting device for controlling the rate of fluid flow through the first passage.

9. A door closer according to claim 8 wherein the fluid flow restricting device can be calibrated or adjusted by a user.

10. A door closer according to claim 8 or 9 wherein the restriction provided by the fluid flow restricting device is configured so as to prevent forced slamming and/or opening of a door when connected to the door closer.

11. A door closer according to any preceding claim wherein the first piston defines a fourth cavity which is positioned between first and second ends of the piston.

12. A door closer according to claim 11 as dependent directly or indirectly on claims 4 and 7 wherein the first passage communicates with the fourth

cavity to permit the flow of fluid in both directions between the second and fourth cavities.

13. A door closer according to claim 12 wherein the first passage communicates with a second passage which second passage is in fluid communication with the first cavity.

14. A door closer according to claim 13 wherein the second passage communicates with the fourth cavity to permit the flow of fluid in both directions between the first and fourth cavities.

15. A door closer according to claim 12 or 13 wherein an entrance to the second passage is positioned in the body of the door closer between the first and second ends of the first piston.

16. A door closer according to claim 13, 14 or 15 wherein the door closer includes an adjustment device for controlling the rate of fluid flow through the second passage.

17. A door closer according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the door closer includes a passage for permitting the flow of fluid in both directions between the first and second cavities.

18. A door closer according to claim 17 wherein the door closer includes a fluid flow restricting device for controlling the rate of fluid flow through the passage

19. A door closer according to claim 18 wherein the fluid flow restricting device can be calibrated or adjusted by a user.

20. A door closer according to claim 19 wherein the restriction provided by the fluid flow restricting device is configured so as to prevent forced slamming and/or opening of a door when connected to the door closer.

21. A door closer according to any one of claims 17 to 20 wherein the door closer includes an adjustment device for controlling the rate of fluid flow through the passage.

22. A door closer according to any one of claims 17 to 21 wherein the passage is provided within the body of the door closer.

23. A door closer according to any preceding claim where dependent directly or indirectly on claim 4 wherein the first end of the first piston includes a one way valve for permitting flow of fluid therethrough only in a direction towards and into from the first cavity.

24. A door closer according to any preceding claim where dependent directly or indirectly on claim 4 wherein the door closer includes a third passage for providing communication between the first and third cavities.

25. A door closer according to claim 24 wherein the door closer includes a blocking member for controlling/preventing the flow of fluid through the third passage in a direction into the third cavity.

26. A door closer according to any preceding claim wherein the biasing member is a spring, preferably a coil spring.

27. A kit of parts for converting a non-swing-free door to a swing-free door closer, the non-swing-free door closer including a body defining a chamber therein, said chamber having first and second ends and supporting therein a

first piston and a biasing device for biasing the first piston towards the first end of the chamber, wherein the kit of parts includes:

a replacement first piston, the replacement first piston having first and second ends and wherein the first end of the first piston includes a one way valve for permitting flow of fluid therethrough and wherein the second end includes a passage for permitting the flow of fluid therethrough;

a second piston, the second piston configured to prevent the passage of fluid within the chamber therethrough or therepast; and

a replacement biasing device which is shorter in length than the original biasing device, wherein the replacement biasing device is capable of biasing the second piston towards the replacement first piston.

28. A kit of parts according to claim 27 including one or more of all of the features of the door closer as set out in claims 1 to 26.

29. A method of converting a non-swing-free door to a swing-free door closer, the non-swing-free door closer including a body defining a chamber therein, said chamber having first and second ends and supporting therein a first piston and a biasing device for biasing the first piston towards the first end of the chamber, wherein the method includes:

removing from chamber of the non-swing-free door closer the first piston and the biasing device;

providing a replacement first piston, the replacement first piston having first and second ends and wherein the first end of the first piston includes a one way valve for permitting flow of fluid therethrough and wherein the second end includes a passage for permitting the flow of fluid therethrough;

inserting into the chamber the replacement first piston such that the first end thereof is positioned adjacent the first end of the chamber;

providing a replacement second piston, the second piston configured to prevent the passage of fluid within the chamber therethrough or therepast;

inserting into the chamber the second piston such that it is positioned adjacent the replacement first piston;

providing a replacement biasing device which is shorter in length than the original biasing device;

inserting into the chamber the replacement biasing device such that it is positioned adjacent the second piston and such that the replacement biasing device is capable of biasing the second piston towards the replacement first piston.

30. A method according to claim 29 wherein the converted swing-free door closer includes one or more of all of the features of the door closer as set out in claims 1 to 26.
