Protection system for a railway electrification system, comprising: a substation controllers operable to provide fault detection functionality for the conductor sections at the substations; circuit breakers at the substations, operable to disconnect a conductor section at the substation under the control of a substation controller; a network connection between adjacent substations by which the substation controllers can distribute protection control signals from one to the next, in order to operate a circuit breaker in the adjacent substation in the response to a detected fault, characterised by, a network connection between the substations and the power converters, by which the substation controllers can distribute protection control signals to the power converters; and power converter controllers operable to perform protection functions at the power converters, in response to a protection control signal received from a substation over the network connection between the substation and the power converter.

L'invention concerne un système de protection pour un système d'électrification de chemin de fer, comprenant : des contrôleurs de sous-station pouvant fonctionner pour fournir une fonctionnalité de détection de défaut pour les sections de conducteur au niveau des sous-stations ; des disjoncteurs au niveau des sous-stations, pouvant fonctionner pour déconnecter une section de conducteur au niveau de la sous-station sous la commande d'un contrôleur de sous-station ; une connexion de réseau entre des sous-stations adjacentes par laquelle les contrôleurs de sous-station peuvent distribuer des signaux de commande de protection de l'une à la suivante, afin de faire fonctionner un disjoncteur dans la sous-station adjacente en réponse à un défaut détecté, caractérisé par une connexion réseau entre les sous-stations et les convertisseurs de puissance, par laquelle les contrôleurs de sous-station peuvent distribuer des signaux de commande de protection aux convertisseurs de puissance ; et des contrôleurs de convertisseur de puissance pouvant fonctionner pour exécuter des fonctions de protection au niveau des convertisseurs de puissance, en réponse à un signal de commande de protection reçu en provenance d'une sous-station sur la connexion réseau entre la sous-station et le convertisseur de puissance.
