Verfahren und Baugruppe zum Absorbieren von Energie bei einem Überlastereignis mit einem Energieabsorber (2), um Belastungen auf ein auf einer Beladungseinheit (100) transportiertes Objekt (103) zu reduzieren. Der Energieabsorber (2) ist geeignet, bei einem einmaligen Überlastereignis mit einem derart hohen Energieeintrag, bei dem ohne Energieabsorber ein Schaden an dem Objekt möglich oder überwiegend wahrscheinlich wäre, Energie zu absorbieren, um durch die Energieabsorption des Energieabsorbers (2) bei dem Überlastereignis eine resultierende Belastung auf das Objekt zu reduzieren. Mit einer Sensoreinrichtung (61) werden periodisch Messwerte (62) über den aktuellen Zustand der Beladungseinheit (100) erfasst. Eine Steuereinrichtung (48) erkennt aus den erfassten Messwerten (62) ein Überlastereignis (65). Es wird ein Maß für ein Gewicht des zu transportierenden Objektes (103) ermittelt. Aus dem Maß für das Gewicht wird ein Grenzwert (68) für eine Belastung des zu transportierenden Objektes (103) ermittelt. Nach der Erkennung des Überlastereignisses (65) wird eine Dämpfung des Energieabsorbers (2) so gesteuert, dass die Belastung des zu transportierenden Objektes (103) unterhalb des Grenzwertes (68) verbleibt.
