A grafted polyvinyl alcohol polymer has a balance between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. The grafted polyvinyl alcohol polymer has a chemical functionality that allows for adsorption onto the pulp fibers, polymer film formation upon drying, repelling water upon wetting, polymer film swelling and breaking for prolonged wetting by water. When incorporated into paper products, the polymer can provide a paper having improved wet strength, temporary water repellency, and/or is dispersible in aqueous solutions.

L'invention concerne un polymère d'alcool de polyvinyle greffé présentant un équilibre entre les caractères hydrophile et hydrophobe. Le polymère d'alcool de polyvinyle greffé possède une fonctionnalité chimique qui permet une adsorption sur les fibres de pâte, la formation d'un film de polymère suite au séchage, la répulsion de l'eau suite au mouillage, le gonflement du film polymère et sa rupture lors d'un mouillage prolongé par de l'eau. Lorsqu'il est incorporé dans des produits de papier, le polymère peut donner un papier présentant une résistance améliorée à l'état humide, une répulsion temporaire de l'eau, et/ou est dispersible dans des solutions aqueuses.
