The present disclosure relates to improvements in the control of a fuel system in an engine such as a combustion engine, and in particular to a method of controlling a pressure relief valve, the fuel system comprising a source of high pressure fuel and an electronically controlled pressure relief valve. A plurality of engine operating parameters are monitored, including an actual fuel pressure in the source of high pressure fuel source and a target pressure for the source high pressure fuel is determined according to engine performance maps. Where it is determined that one of the plurality of predetermined operating conditions exists, at least one control map is used to determine an opening duration for the pressure relief valve. The opening duration is that which enables the actual fuel pressure to be maintained at the target pressure or to be brought into line with the target pressure. The pressure relief valve is then opened for the determined opening duration.

La présente invention se rapporte à des améliorations de la commande d'un système de carburant dans un moteur tel qu'un moteur à combustion, et en particulier un procédé de commande d'une soupape de surpression, le système de carburant comprenant une source de carburant à haute pression et une soupape de surpression à commande électronique. Une pluralité de paramètres de fonctionnement de moteur sont surveillés, y compris une pression de carburant réelle dans la source de carburant à haute pression et une pression cible pour le carburant à haute pression de la source est déterminée en fonction de cartes de performances du moteur. Lorsque l'existence est déterminée de l'une parmi une pluralité de conditions de fonctionnement prédéterminées, au moins une carte de commande est utilisée pour déterminer une durée d'ouverture pour la soupape de surpression. La durée d'ouverture est celle qui permet à la pression de carburant réelle d'être maintenue à la pression cible ou d'être alignée sur la pression cible.
