A coated optical fiber coupled to a light source for inactivating pathogens on surfaces or in water. The coated optical fiber includes a UV-transparent core, particles adhered to the core, and a UV-transparent polymer coating in contact with the particles. Coating the optical fiber includes adhering particles to a surface of a glass fiber core to yield a functionalized core, contacting the functionalized core with an aqueous solution having an ionic strength of at least about 0.1 M, coating the functionalized core with a polymerizable material, and polymerizing the polymerizerable material to yield a UV-transparent polymer coating on the functionalized core.

La présente invention concerne une fibre optique revêtue accouplée à une source de lumière pour l'inactivation d'agents pathogènes sur des surfaces ou dans l'eau. La fibre optique revêtue comprend un cœur transparent aux UV, des particules qui adhèrent au cœur, et un revêtement polymère transparent aux UV en contact avec les particules.
