A geological repository adapted for permanent isolation of hazardous waste and a method permanently isolating hazardous waste from the biosphere are disclosed. The geological repository includes a near surface void having side walls and a floor disposed in a geologically stable formation. The geologically stable formation is selected to have low permeability, thereby providing a barrier to ingress of groundwater. The repository is provided with a ramp to the floor of the void for movement of hazardous material transporting vehicles and an inflatable cover configured to provide a barrier between the void and the surface environment. The inflatable cover has a flexible top layer adapted to extend over the entire area of said void and outer edge elements which form a plurality of skirt flaps disposed along its perimeter. An anchor is used to secure said skirt flaps to a surface perimeter of said void so as to maintain a seal between the inflatable cover and said void. One or more sealable access hatches are provided in the inflatable cover to allow access of personnel and hazardous material transporting vehicles between said void and the surface environment. The repository is also provided with a fan for inflating the inflatable cover.

L'invention concerne un stockage final situé dans une formation géologique conçu pour l'isolation permanente de déchets dangereux et un procédé permettant d'isoler de façon permanente des déchets dangereux de la biosphère. Le stockage final situé dans une formation géologique comprend un vide proche de la surface ayant des parois latérales et un plancher disposé dans une formation géologiquement stable. La formation géologiquement stable est sélectionnée de façon à avoir une faible perméabilité, permettant d'obtenir une barrière contre l'infiltration d'eau souterraine. Le stockage final situé dans une formation géologique est pourvu d'une rampe au fond du vide pour le déplacement de véhicules de transport de matière dangereuse et d'un couvercle gonflable conçu pour fournir une barrière entre le vide et l'environnement de surface. Le couvercle gonflable a une couche supérieure souple conçue pour s'étendre sur toute la surface dudit vide et des éléments de bord externe qui forment une pluralité de rabats de jupe disposés le long de son périmètre. Un ancrage est utilisé pour fixer lesdits rabats de jupe à un périmètre de surface dudit vide de façon à maintenir un joint d'étanchéité entre le couvercle gonflable et ledit vide. Une ou plusieurs trappes d'accès pouvant être scellées sont disposées dans le couvercle gonflable pour permettre l'accès au personnel et aux véhicules transportant la matière dangereuse entre ledit vide et l'environnement de surface. Le stockage final situé dans une formation géologique est également doté d'un ventilateur destiné à gonfler le couvercle gonflable.
