Provided herein are dispersible copolymer powders and asphalt compositions comprising the same. The dispersible copolymer powders comprise a core polymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 40°C or less and a shell comprising a water soluble protective colloid polymer having a Tg of 50°C or greater. The core polymer can be derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer, a 1,3-diene monomer, and optionally one or more ethylenically-unsaturated monomers. The protective colloid polymer can be selected from a polyvinyl alcohol, a polyvinyl pyrrolidone, a polysaccharide, other water soluble polymers, or a combination thereof. Methods of preparing a styrene-butadiene modified asphalt without significantly increasing the viscosity, comprising adding the dispersible copolymer powder to an asphalt composition, wherein the addition of the copolymer polymer increases the viscosity of the asphalt by 100% or less at 135°C within 2 hours of mixing are also described herein.

L'invention concerne des poudres de copolymère dispersibles et des compositions d'asphaltes les comprenant. Les poudres de copolymère dispersibles comprennent un polymère de cœur ayant une température de transition vitreuse (Tg) de 40 °C ou moins et une enveloppe comprenant un polymère colloïdal protecteur soluble dans l'eau ayant une Tg de 50 °C ou plus. Le polymère de cœur peut être dérivé d'un monomère aromatique de vinyle, d'un monomère de 1,3-diène, et éventuellement d'un ou plusieurs monomères éthyléniquement insaturé. Le polymère colloïdal protecteur peut être sélectionné parmi un alcool polyvinylique, une polyvinylpyrrolidone, un polysaccharide, d'autres polymères solubles dans l'eau, ou une combinaison de ceux-ci. L'invention concerne également des procédés de préparation d'un asphalte modifié au styrène-butadiène sans augmenter significativement la viscosité, comprenant l'ajout de la poudre de copolymère dispersible à une composition d'asphalte, l'ajout des poudres de copolymère augmentant la viscosité de l'asphalte de 100 % ou moins à 135 °C en 2 heures de mélange.
