An electronic control unit (ECU) (43) of an exhaust gas purifying device (40) which is disposed in an exhaust gas passage of an engine (10), and which includes a Lean NOx Trap (LNT) (41), sets, on the basis of an absorbed NOx quantity, an execution start condition to be applied when execution of a rich spike is to be started, and switches the execution start condition to be applied when the absorbed NOx quantity has risen to or above a reference value, from a first condition, namely that a lockup clutch of a torque converter (11) connected to the engine (10) is not directly coupled and the oil temperature in the torque converter (11) is at least equal to a prescribed temperature, to a second condition, namely that the lockup clutch is not directly coupled.

エンジン(10)の排気通路に配設された、LNT(41)を有する排気浄化装置(40)のECU(43)であって、ECU(43)は、リッチスパイクの実行を開始する際、吸蔵NOx量に基づいて適用する実行開始条件を設定し、吸蔵NOx量が基準値以上に増加した場合、適用する実行開始条件を、エンジン(10)と接続されたトルクコンバータ(11)のロックアップクラッチが非直結状態で、且つ、トルクコンバータ(11)の油温が所定温度以上であるときの第1条件から、ロックアップクラッチが非直結状態であるときの第2条件に変更する。
