Mineral wool having a chemical composition comprising the following constituents, as weight percentages: 39-50% SiO2, 9.5-27% Al2O3, 5-12% CaO, 1-5% MgO, 5-20% Na2O, 0-15% K2O, 2-15% Fe2O3, 0-2% B2O3, an MgO/RO weight ratio of greater than 0.10 and less than 0.50 and an RO/(RO+R2O) weight ratio of less than 0.55, in which RO represents the alkaline-earth metal oxides CaO, MgO, BaO and SrO, and R2O represents the alkali metal oxides Na2O and K2O.
