Providing backward compatibility in terms of a media bitstream and a media player conforming to different versions of a media bitstream syntax specification. In one embodiment, a bitstream is made backward compatible by including in the bitstream a first entry for a feature available in the media bitstream and second entry for an updated feature available in the media bitstream, where the first entry is understood both by a media player supporting a first version of a syntax specification and a media player supporting an updated version of the syntax specification, and the second entry is understood by the media player supporting the updated version of the syntax specification, but is not understood by the media player supporting the first version of the syntax specification.

L'invention concerne la capacité de doter un flux binaire multimédia et un lecteur multimédia d'une rétrocompatibilité, selon différentes versions d'une spécification syntaxique d'un flux binaire multimédia. Dans un mode de réalisation, un flux binaire est rendu rétrocompatible en incluant dans le flux binaire une première entrée relative à une caractéristique disponible dans le flux binaire multimédia, et une seconde entrée relative à une caractéristique mise à jour disponible dans le flux binaire multimédia. La première entrée est comprise à la fois par un lecteur multimédia prenant en charge une première version d'une spécification syntaxique, et par un lecteur multimédia prenant en charge une version mise à jour de la spécification syntaxique. La seconde entrée est comprise par le lecteur multimédia prenant en charge la version mise à jour de la spécification syntaxique, mais n'est pas comprise par le lecteur multimédia prenant en charge la première version de la spécification syntaxique.
