Bei dem Verfahren zum Herstellen einer stoffschlüssigen Verbindung von Werkstücken mittels Rührreibschweißen werden während der Rotation und der Durchführung der Vorschubbewegung mit mindestens einer Einrichtung (2) Schwingungen in die Fügenzone der Werkstücke (8) über die Halterung des stiftförmigen Werkzeugs (1, 11), die Halterung einer nicht mit dem stiftförmigen Werkzeug verbundenen Schulter (10, 16d) und/oder einem an der der Halterung des stiftförmigen Werkzeugs (1, 11) gegenüberliegenden Seite der Werkstücke (8) angeordneten Gegenhalter (9) in die Werkstücke (8) mit einer Frequenz, die einer Eigenresonanzfrequenz der zur Einkoppelung genutzten Einrichtung entspricht, eingekoppelt. Allein oder zusätzlich können mit einer Einrichtung, die zur Durchführung eines Wärmepulsverfahrens ausgebildet ist, Schwingungen mit einer Frequenz, die der Eigenresonanzfrequenz der Halterung des stiftförmigen Werkzeugs (1, 11) mit dem stiftförmigen Werkzeug (1, 1) entspricht, in die Werkstücke (8), die Halterung des stiftförmigen Werkzeugs, einer Schulter (10) des stiftförmigen Werkzeugs und oder den Gegenhalter (9) eingekoppelt werden.
