Methods of manufacturing a ceramic honeycomb body having a honeycomb structure with a matrix of intersecting walls, and a skin disposed on an outer peripheral portion of the matrix where the skin has a first average porosity and the interior portion of the matrix has a second average porosity that is greater than the first average porosity. The methods include coating at least the skin with a fluid formulation containing a sintering aid and subsequently firing the honeycomb structure. In certain embodiments, a glass layer is formed in the skin or in regions of the walls directly adjacent to the skin. In certain embodiments, the coating is applied to a green honeycomb structure, and in other embodiments the coating is applied to a ceramic honeycomb structure. Other honeycomb bodies and methods are described.

La présente invention concerne des procédés de fabrication d’un corps en nid d’abeilles en céramique ayant une structure en nid d’abeilles ayant une matrice de parois en intersection, et une peau disposée sur une partie périphérique externe de la matrice où la peau présente une première porosité moyenne et la partie intérieure de la matrice présente une seconde porosité moyenne qui est supérieure à la première porosité moyenne. Les procédés comprennent le revêtement d’au moins la peau avec une formulation liquide contenant un auxiliaire de frittage et par la suite la calcination de la structure en nid d’abeilles. Dans certains modes de réalisation, une couche de verre est formée dans la peau ou dans les régions des parois directement adjacentes à la peau. Dans certains modes de réalisation, le revêtement est appliqué à une structure crue en nid d’abeilles, et dans d’autres modes de réalisation le revêtement est appliqué à une structure en nid d’abeilles en céramique.
