Abstract:
(EN) An electrically switchable optical modulator for modulating an optical wavefront transmitted therethrough, comprising a birefringent first optical element and a birefringent second optical element each having respective ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices. A birefringent liquid crystal material is sandwiched between the first and second optical elements. The extraordinary refractive index of the liquid crystal material is electrically switchable between: a first state in which it has a first value; and, a second state in which it has a second value different from the first value. One or both of the first value and the second value is un-matched to the extraordinary refractive index of the first optical element in respect of light polarised in a first direction of linear polarisation, and is un-matched to the extraordinary refractive index of the second optical element in respect of light polarised in a second direction of linear polarisation orthogonal to the first direction.This switchably renders a relative contrast in extraordinary refractive index as between the liquid crystal material and the first and second optical elements for modulating said wavefront.
(FR) La présente invention concerne un modulateur optique commutable électriquement pour moduler un front d'onde optique transmis à travers celui-ci, comprenant un premier élément optique biréfringent et un second élément optique biréfringent ayant chacun des indices de réfraction respectivement ordinaire et extraordinaire. Un matériau à cristaux liquides biréfringent est enserré entre les premier et second éléments optiques. L'indice de réfraction extraordinaire du matériau à cristaux liquides peut être commuté électriquement entre : un premier état dans lequel il a une première valeur ; et un second état dans lequel il a une seconde valeur différente de la première valeur. L'une ou les deux première et seconde valeur ne correspondent pas à l'indice de réfraction extraordinaire du premier élément optique par rapport à la lumière polarisée dans une première direction de polarisation linéaire et ne correspondent pas à l'indice de réfraction extraordinaire du second élément optique par rapport à la lumière polarisée dans une seconde direction de polarisation linéaire orthogonale à la première direction. Cela permet un rendu commutable d'un contraste relatif dans un indice de réfraction extraordinaire entre le matériau à cristaux liquides et les premier et second éléments optiques pour moduler ledit front d'onde.
