Abstract:
(EN) The present invention describes a liquid crystal composite tunable device for fast polarisation-independent modulation of an incident light beam comprising: (a) two supporting and functional panels, at least one of them coated with a transparent conductive electrode layer and with optionally at least one additional layer selected from an alignment layer, antireflective coating layer, thermochromic or electrochromic layer, photoconductive or photosensitive layer, and (b) a composite structure sandwiched between said two panels and made of a liquid crystal and porous microparticles infiltrated with said liquid crystal. The porous microparticles have an average refractive index approximately equals to one of the liquid crystal principal refractive indices, matching that of the liquid crystal at one orientational state (for example, parallel n), and exhibiting large mismatch at another orientational state (for example, perpendicular n). This refractive index mismatch between said microparticles and said liquid crystal is tuned by applying an external electric or magnetic field, thermally or optically.
(FR) La présente invention concerne un dispositif accordable composite à cristal liquide destiné à la modulation rapide indépendante de la polarisation d'un faisceau lumineux incident et comprenant : (a) deux panneaux de support et fonctionnels, au moins l'un d'entre eux étant revêtu d'une couche d'électrode conductrice transparente et éventuellement d'au moins une couche supplémentaire choisie parmi une couche d'alignement, une couche de revêtement antireflet, une couche thermochromique ou électrochromique, une couche photoconductrice ou photosensible, et (b) une structure composite prise en sandwich entre lesdits deux panneaux et constituée d'un cristal liquide et de microparticules poreuses infiltrées avec ledit cristal liquide. Les microparticules poreuses ont un indice de réfraction moyen approximativement égal à l'un des indices de réfraction principaux de cristal liquide, correspondant à celui du cristal liquide à un état d'orientation (par exemple parallèle n), et présentant un grand décalage à un autre état d'orientation (par exemple perpendiculaire n). Ce décalage d'indice de réfraction entre lesdites microparticules et ledit cristal liquide est accordé par application d'un champ électrique ou magnétique externe, de façon thermique ou optique.
