A dirt separator for a vacuum cleaner comprising a chamber (36) having an inlet (37) through which dirt-laden fluid enters and an outlet (38) through which cleansed fluid exits the chamber (36). A disc (40) located at the outlet 38 rotates about a rotational axis (48) and comprises holes (47) through which the cleansed fluid passes. The inlet (37) is defined by an end of an inlet duct (21) that extends within the chamber (38), and a separation distance between the centre of the inlet (37) and the centre of the disc (40) is no greater than the diameter of the inlet.
