Patent Claims

A glucose test arrangement for use in a handheld meter, comprising a disposable test pad (16) which is responsive to glucose in a body fluid, and a supporting member (30) adapted to support the test pad (16) at an application site for applying body fluid, particularly as a drop of blood, from a user's skin onto a receiving area (38) of the test pad (16), wherein the receiving area (38) faces away from the supporting member (30), characterized in that one or more spacer elements (20) are arranged on the supporting member (30) adjacent to the test pad (16), wherein the one or more spacer elements (20) have a skin-contacting end section (36) which protrudes above the receiving area (38).

The arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the test pad (16) is moveable relative to the supporting member (30) and to the spacer elements (20) thereon.

The arrangement of claim 1 or 2, wherein a bottom side of the test pad (16) provided at the application site flatly and fully abuts against the supporting member (30), and the receiving area (38) is arranged on a top side of the test pad (16) opposite to the bottom side of the test pad (16).

The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the spacer elements (20) are arranged adjacent to a boundary of the receiving area (38) such that they are bodily separate from the test pad (16) at the application site and without solid connection to the test pad (16) at the application site.

5. The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the spacer elements (20) are selected from the group comprising ridges, bars, pins, spikes, edges, rectangles, triangles, and saw-tooth structures.

6. The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the spacer elements (20) have a beveled, chamfered and/or rounded contour.

7. The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the spacer elements (20) are made of a non-elastic material as a rigid formed part.

8. The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the spacer elements (20) are arranged on opposite sides of the preferably rectangular test pad (16).

9. The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 8, wherein the end section (36) of the spacer elements (20) has a linear or pointed contact surface for contacting the user's skin.

The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 9, wherein the spacer elements (20) are adapted to provide a haptic feedback to the user and/or to essentially prevent direct finger contact with the test pad (16) during sample application.

The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 10, wherein the test pad (16) is at least partly compressible or becomes at least partly compressible after sample application.

The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 1 1 , wherein the spacer elements (20) have a height in the range from 0.5 to 5 mm, particularly from 1 to 3 mm.

13. The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 12, wherein the supporting member (30) comprises a window (40) for optically scanning a bottom side of the test pad (16) opposite to the receiving area (38).

14. The arrangement of claim 13, wherein the window (40) contains an optical element or delimits an opening free from an optical element.

15. The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 14, wherein the supporting member (30) is formed as a tip (18) for guiding a transport tape (14) which carries a plurality of test pads (16) spaced apart from each other.

The arrangement according to any of claims 1 to 15, wherein the supporting member (30) is adapted to position a test strip carrying a single test pad (16).

17. A tape cassette for glucose tests, comprising the arrangement of any of claims 1 to 16, wherein the supporting member (30) is formed as a deflection tip (18) for a transport tape (14) which carries a plurality of test pads (16) spaced apart from each other, and wherein the spacer elements (20) are arranged on both sides of the transport tape (14), preferably as injection-moulded parts.

18. A handheld meter for glucose tests, comprising the tape cassette (10) or the arrangement of any of the previous claims, and a preferably photometric detection unit (28) operable for detecting measuring values on the test pad (16).

19. A glucose test method for use in a handheld meter, comprising

providing a disposable test pad (16) which is responsive to glucose in a body fluid,

positioning the test pad (16) on a supporting member (30) at an application site for body fluid, where one or more spacer elements (20) are arranged on the supporting member (30) adjacent to the test pad (16),

applying body fluid, particularly as a drop of blood, from a user's skin onto a receiving area (38) of the test pad (16), where the receiving area (38) faces away from the supporting member (30), contacting the user's skin by means of a skin-contacting end section (36) of the one or more spacer elements (20) which protrudes above the receiving area (38), thereby preventing direct finger contact with the test pad (16) during sample application for enhanced accuracy of the glucose test.
