Techniques are disclosed for systems and methods to detect and/or classify a vehicle occupant, such as a passenger seated within the cockpit of a vehicle. An occupant classification system includes an occupant weight sensor, an occupant presence sensor, and a logic device configured to communicate with the occupant sensors. The occupant weight sensor includes at least first and second conductive electrodes separated by a dielectric layer, top and bottom protective plastic layers configured to support the respective first and second conductive electrodes, and adhesive layers disposed between the plastic layers and the conductive electrodes and between the conductive electrodes and the dielectric layer. The top protective plastic layer is longer and/or wider than the first conductive electrode and the bottom protective plastic layer is longer and/or wider than the second conductive electrode to provide edge protection against electrical shorts for the first and second conductive electrodes.

L'invention concerne des techniques pour des systèmes et des procédés permettant de détecter et/ou de classifier un occupant de véhicule, tel qu'un passager assis à l'intérieur du poste de pilotage d'un véhicule. Un système de classification d'occupant comprend un capteur de poids d'occupant, un capteur de présence d'occupant et un dispositif logique configuré pour communiquer avec les capteurs d'occupant. Le capteur de poids d'occupant comprend au moins des première et seconde électrodes conductrices séparées par une couche diélectrique, des couches de plastique de protection supérieure et inférieure configurées pour prendre en charge les première et seconde électrodes conductrices respectives et des couches adhésives disposées entre les couches de plastique et les électrodes conductrices et entre les électrodes conductrices et la couche diélectrique. La couche de plastique de protection supérieure est plus longue et/ou plus large que la première électrode conductrice et la couche de plastique de protection inférieure est plus longue et/ou plus large que la seconde électrode conductrice pour assurer une protection de bord contre des courts-circuits électriques pour les première et seconde électrodes conductrices.
