CLAIMS

What is claimed is:

1. A carving head for cutting a cured tire, comprising:

a frame;

a blade mounting assembly that is removably attachable to the frame;

an attachment mechanism that removably attaches the blade mounting assembly to the frame;

a plurality of blades that are carried by the blade mounting assembly and the frame when the blade mounting assembly is attached to the frame by the attachment mechanism, wherein when the attachment mechanism does not attach the blade mounting assembly to the frame the blades are not carried by the frame; and

a heating element carried by the frame, wherein heat from the heating element is transferred through the frame, wherein the blades are heated by the heat from the heating element when the blades are carried by the blade mounting assembly and the frame when the blade mounting assembly is attached to the frame by the attachment mechanism.

2. The carving head as set forth in claim 1, wherein the attachment mechanism comprising:

a first set screw that engages the frame; and

a second set screw that engages the frame, wherein the blade mounting assembly is located between the first set screw and the second set screw in a lateral direction of the carving head, wherein the first and second set screw are movable in the lateral direction relative to the frame to tighten the blade mounting assembly between the first and second set screw when the blade mounting assembly is attached to the frame by the attachment mechanism.

3. The carving head as set forth in claims 1 or 2, wherein the attachment mechanism comprising:

a bar that is movable relative to the frame;

a first tightening bolt that extends through the bar and is received by the frame in a threaded engagement; and

a second tightening bolt that extends through the bar and is received by the frame in a threaded engagement, wherein tightening of the first and second tightening bolt urges the bar against the blade mounting assembly to urge the blade mounting assembly against the frame in a longitudinal direction of the carving head.

4. The carving head as set forth in any one of claims 1-3, wherein the frame defines a hole, and wherein the heating element is a heating cartridge that is located within the hole of the frame, wherein the heating cartridge generates the heat through electrical resistance.

The carving head as set forth in any one of claims 1-4, wherein the heat from the heating element is transferred from the heating element to the frame, and then from the frame to the blade mounting assembly, and then from the blade mounting assembly to the blades when the blades are carried by the blade mounting assembly and the frame when the blade mounting assembly is attached to the frame by the attachment mechanism.

6. The carving head as set forth in any one of claims 1-5, wherein the frame is configured for being carried by a lever press and a rotary/cross-slide table at a carving post.

7. The carving head as set forth in claim 6, further comprising a mounting adapter that is bolted to the frame, wherein the mounting adapter is configured for attachment to the lever press and the rotary/cross-slide table at the carving post to cause the frame to be carried by the lever press and the rotary/cross-slide table at the carving post.

The carving head as set forth in any one of claims 1-7, wherein the blade mounting assembly comprising a plurality of blade engagement bases that engage the blades when the blades are carried by the blade mounting assembly and the frame when the blade mounting assembly is attached to the frame by the attachment mechanism, wherein each one of the blade engagement bases engages only one of the blades and does not engage more than one of the blades.

The carving head as set forth in claim 8, wherein the blade engagement bases each define a depression into which one of the blades is disposed, wherein all of the blade engagement bases engage the frame and all of the blades are free from engagement with the frame when the blades are carried by the blade mounting assembly and the frame when the blade mounting assembly is attached to the frame by the attachment mechanism.

The carving head as set forth in any one of claims 1-9, wherein the blades each define a void, and wherein the blade mounting assembly comprising a plurality of blade thermal transfer plates that are disposed within the voids of the blades when the blades are carried by the blade mounting assembly and the frame when the blade mounting assembly is attached to the frame by the attachment mechanism.

11. The carving head as set forth in any one of claims 1-10, wherein the blade mounting assembly comprising blade mounting blocks that are spaced from and out of engagement with one another in the lateral direction of the carving head, wherein the blade mounting blocks engage the blades.

12. The carving head as set forth in claim 11, wherein the blade mounting blocks are free from engagement with the frame.

13. The carving head as set forth in claims 11 or 12, wherein the attachment mechanism engages the blade mounting blocks and urges the blade mounting blocks towards the frame, and wherein the attachment mechanism engages the blade mounting blocks and urges the blade mounting blocks in the lateral direction of the carving head.

14. The carving head as set forth in any one of claims 11-13, wherein the blade mounting assembly comprising a pair of spacer blocks positioned on opposites sides of the blade mounting assembly in the lateral direction of the carving head, wherein the attachment mechanism engages the spacer blocks and urges the spacer blocks and the blade mounting blocks in the lateral direction of the carving head, wherein the spacer blocks are free from engagement with the blades.

15. The carving head as set forth in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the blades, the blade mounting assembly, the attachment mechanism, the heating element, and the frame are configured for creating grooves in tread of a cured tire wherein the created grooves are spaced from side edges of the tread such that the created grooves do not extend to the side edges of the tread.
