CLAIMS

What is claimed is:

1. An apparatus comprising logic and circuitry configured to cause a mobile station to:

broadcast a probe request comprising area information defining a restricted response area to indicate that only Access Points (APs) which are in the restricted response area are to respond to the probe request; and

receive, in response to said probe request, one or more probe responses from one or more APs in the restricted response area.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the area information is to indicate that APs that are not in the restricted response area are not to respond to the probe request.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the area information comprises latitude information, longitude information, and floor information of a floor of said restricted response area.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the area information comprises one or more location parameters to define a center of said restricted response area, and a radius parameter to define a radius of said restricted response area.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the restricted response area comprises an expected location of said mobile station after a predefined time period from transmission of the probe request.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 configured to cause the mobile station to determine said restricted response area based on one or more movement parameters of a detected movement of said mobile station.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the one or more movement parameters comprise at least one of a direction of the detected movement of said mobile station or a speed of the detected movement of said mobile station.

8. The apparatus of any one of claims 1-7 configured to cause the mobile station to broadcast the probe request when the mobile station is connected to a first AP, which is not in the restricted response area, to receive a probe response from a second AP, which is in the restricted response area, and to communicate with the second AP when the mobile station is to be in the restricted response area.

9. The apparatus of any one of claims 1-7, wherein the probe request comprises a probe-request targeted-area field comprising said area information.

10. The apparatus of any one of claims 1-7, wherein the probe request comprises a parameter control bitmap field comprising a bit to indicate that the probe request comprises the area information.

11. The apparatus of any one of claims 1-7 comprising a radio.

12. The apparatus of any one of claims 1-7 comprising a memory, a processor, and one or more antennas.

13. A method to be performed at a mobile station, the method comprising:

broadcasting a probe request comprising area information defining a restricted response area to indicate that only Access Points (APs) which are in the restricted response area are to respond to the probe request; and

receiving, in response to said probe request, one or more probe responses from one or more APs in the restricted response area.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the area information is to indicate that APs that are not in the restricted response area are not to respond to the probe request.

15. The method of claim 13 comprising determining said restricted response area based on one or more movement parameters of a detected movement of said mobile station.

16. A product comprising one or more tangible computer-readable non-transitory storage media comprising computer-executable instructions operable to, when executed by at least one processor, enable the at least one processor to cause a wireless station to perform the method of any one of claims 13-15.

17. An apparatus comprising logic and circuitry configured to cause an Access Point (AP) to:

process a broadcast probe request from a mobile station, the broadcast probe request comprising area information defining a restricted response area to indicate that only APs that are in the restricted response area are to respond to the broadcast probe request; and

based on whether the AP is in the restricted response area, select whether or not to allow the AP to transmit a probe response in response to the broadcast probe request.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 configured to allow the AP to transmit the probe response only when the AP is in the restricted response area or when a location of the AP is unknown.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 configured to cause the AP to select not to respond to the broadcast probe request when the AP is not in the restricted response area.

20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the area information comprises latitude information, longitude information, and floor information of a floor of said restricted response area.

21. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the area information comprises one or more location parameters to define a center of said restricted response area, and a radius parameter to define a radius of said restricted response area.

22. The apparatus of any one of claims 17-21, wherein the restricted response area comprises an expected location of said mobile station after a predefined time period from transmission of the broadcast probe request.

23. The apparatus of any one of claims 17-21 comprising a memory, a processor, and one or more antennas.

24. A product comprising one or more tangible computer-readable non-transitory storage media comprising computer-executable instructions operable to, when executed by at least one processor, enable the at least one processor to cause an Access Point (AP) to:

process a broadcast probe request from a mobile station, the broadcast probe request comprising area information defining a restricted response area to indicate that only APs that are in the restricted response area are to respond to the broadcast probe request; and

based on whether the AP is in the restricted response area, select whether or not to allow the AP to transmit a probe response in response to the broadcast probe request.

25. The product of claim 24, wherein the instructions, when executed, allow the AP to transmit the probe response only when the AP is in the restricted response area or when a location of the AP is unknown.
