CLAIMS

1 . A method comprising:

in response to a determination that a user is not consuming or not fully consuming virtual content, rendering to the user, a real-time notification in response to real-time virtual content consumable by the user , wherein the real-time notification directs a user to adopt a particular orientation in the real space for starting or augmenting consumption, of the real-time virtual content.

A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the virtual content is virtual visual content, wherein in response to a determination that a user is not consuming virtual visual content, rendering to the user, the real-time notification in response to real-time virtual visual content consumable by the user, wherein the real-time notification directs the user to adopt a particular orientation in the real space for starting consumption of the real-time virtual visual content.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein

in response to a determination that a user is not using a primary apparatus for consumption of virtual content, rendering to the user not using the primary apparatus, a realtime notification in response to real-time virtual content consumable by the user when using the primary apparatus in a real space, wherein the real-time notification directs a user to adopt a particular orientation in the real space for starting consumption, when using a secondary apparatus, of the real-time virtual content.

4. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the primary apparatus is a head-mounted apparatus or the primary apparatus is a head-mounted display device and the virtual content comprises virtual visual content.

5. A method as claimed in claim 3, 4 or 5, wherein the secondary apparatus is a handheld apparatus.

6. A method as claimed in any preceding claim comprising determining that the user is not consuming or not fully consuming virtual content by determining that the, user is not using a head-mounted apparatus.

7. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein if the user adopts the particular orientation in the real space, within a time threshold, in response to the rendering of the realtime notification enables, the method causes rendering of virtual content to the user.

A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein if the user adopts the particular orientation in the real space by holding a handheld apparatus so that it captures images from the particular orientation in the real space, within a time threshold, in response to the rendering of the real-time notification, the method causes automatic rendering of at least virtual visual content to the user via the handheld apparatus.

9. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the real-time notification is provided by a handheld apparatus or one of a plurality of spatially distributed apparatus but is not provided by a head-mounted apparatus.

10. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the real-time notification is a visual-only notification, or is an audio-only notification or is an audiovisual notification.

A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the real-time notification is generated as an object having a particular location, in real space, that depends upon a mapping between the real space and the virtual space and a virtual orientation or virtual orientation and location of the consumed virtual content in the virtual space.

12. A method as claimed in claim 1 1 , wherein the object is a sound object generated in a head-mounted audio device worn by the user, or generated by broadcasting audio from spatially distributed loudspeakers.

A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the virtual content represents a virtual space at a virtual orientation of a notional viewer and that part of the virtual space at the virtual orientation of the notional viewer represented by the virtual content depends upon a mapping between the real space and the virtual space and the real orientation of the head-mounted apparatus in the real space, further comprising changing the mapping before rendering to the user the real-time notification.

14. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the real-time audio notification directs a user to adopt the particular orientation and, in addition, a particular location in the real space for starting consumption, when using the head-mounted display of the real-time virtual content.

15. An apparatus comprising means for performing the method of any preceding claim or a computer program that when run by a processor enables the performance of any one of claims 1 to 13.
