Abstract:
Provided is a method of producing a binary tetrafluoroethylene (TFE)/ethylene (E) copolymer having exceptional mechanical strength and thermal stability. A method for producing a binary TFE/E copolymer in which TFE and E are polymerized in a reaction system including an aqueous medium, an emulsifier, and a radical polymerization initiator in an amount of 10 to 5000 ppm relative to the aqueous medium, by maintaining a ratio of 60 to 85 mol% of TFE and 40 to 15 mol% of E relative to the total weight of TFE and E, wherein the radical polymerization initiator generates radicals when reduced in water, the polymerization temperature is 5 to 40°C, and an alkali that neutralizes the acid generated as part of the polymerization reaction and a reducing agent that reduces the radical polymerization initiator are added to the aqueous medium.
