The invention is directed to a piece of seating furniture having at least one seating surface and at least one backrest, wherein two or more elongate profiles, preferably each with round outer cross sections, are fastened on a load-bearing part in the region of the seating surface, said profiles projecting upwards parallel to one another, but without any direct rigid connection to one another, within the surface area of the backrest approximately as far as the upper edge of the backrest, and wherein the backrest is subdivided vertically into a plurality of backrest segments, preferably into three or more backrest segments, which are each in the form of a strip of horizontal longitudinal extent, each having an inner, load-bearing, at least partially planar structural element for supporting upholstery, which is made of a soft material and/or of a covering material and is fastened on said structural element or engages around the same, wherein an inner, at least partially planar structural element, for each profile, has a through-going aperture, of which the inner side fully, or at least partially, engages around, or encloses, the relevant profile, wherein an articulated connection is established between the inner side of the aperture in the structural element and the profile which has the latter engaging around it or enclosing it, said articulated connection allowing rotation of the relevant backrest segment about the longitudinal axis of the profile and/or tilting of the relevant backrest segment about a direction which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the engaged profile, preferably about a direction which follows the line of connection between the two profiles; according to the invention, two, more or all of the planar structural elements are connected to one another in the region of at least in each case one of their free, lateral end surfaces.
