Abstract:
A load-following fuel cell system (100) for a grid system operating with a high penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources includes a baseload power generation module (25) and a load-following power generation module (35). The baseload power generation module (25) provides a baseload power to the grid system and includes a high-efficiency fuel cell system such as a MCFC system. The high-efficiency fuel cell system includes a topping module (25a) and a bottoming module (25b). The topping module (25a) and the bottoming module (25b) are connected in series and the topping module (25a) provides an exhaust stream to the bottoming module (25b). The load-following power generation module (35) provides a load-following power to the grid system and includes an energy storage system (40a, 40b, 40c) that separates and stores hydrogen contained in the exhaust stream and a power generation system having one or more fuel cells (45). The power generation system (45) such as a PEM fuel cell system receives the hydrogen from the energy storage system (40c) to provide the load-following power.
