A vertical pump comprising: a rotating shaft; multi-stage impellers configured so as to rotate in conjunction with the rotating shaft; a casing housing the multi-stage impellers; a mechanical seal provided in a section of the casing penetrated by the rotating shaft; a balance sleeve positioned between the mechanical seal and the final-stage impeller among the multi-stage impellers, in the rotating shaft penetration section, said balance sleeve being for at least partially balancing the thrust force of the rotating shaft; an intermediate chamber provided on the opposite side to the multi-stage impellers and having the balance sleeve therebetween in the axial direction of the rotating shaft, between the rotating shaft and the casing, and communicating with a mid-stage impeller among the multi-stage impellers; a low-pressure chamber provided adjacent to the mechanical seal in the axial direction, between the rotating shaft and the casing, and communicating with the low pressure side of the mid-stage impeller; and a partitioning section that partitions between the intermediate chamber and the low-pressure chamber.
