The invention relates to a security feature for a security element, a security paper or a data carrier, said security feature having a carrier comprising a front face and a rear face, wherein the carrier has, on the front face and/or rear face, an arrangement of perforations produced using laser radiation, meaning that the thickness of the carrier is locally modified. According to the invention, the arrangement of perforations produced using laser radiation is irregular, meaning that a multitonal image is generated. In this context, "irregular" means that adjacently arranged perforations are not at the same distance from one another or not at a uniform distance from one another. Preferably, the perforations are arranged stochastically or randomly with respect to one another. Therefore, according to the invention, a pattern of irregularly or randomly arranged perforations is used, meaning that a multitonal image is produced.
