The invention relates to a storage system for containers. A plurality of containers can be stacked one over the other in the form of a container stack, and a plurality of container stacks can be arranged next to one another. A container is stored into the container stack and removed from the container stack from the lower face of the container stack. The storage system comprises multiple vertical shafts, wherein each shaft is designed to at least partly receive a container stack and has a lower opening for storing and removing containers. At least one holding device is provided in the region of the lower opening for holding the container stack in the shaft, said holding device having pivotal holding hooks, by means of which a container can be held at at least two opposite container sides on holding edges arranged on the container lower face. The invention additionally relates to a container for storing into such a storage system.
