Abstract:
[Problem] To provide an optical element and a display device with which waveguide loss can be reduced, laser oscillation can be suppressed, and high output power can be achieved. [Solution] An optical element of the present technology comprises a substrate, a first end which is a light output end, and a second end disposed on the opposite side from the first end. The optical element is provided with: a first electrode layer; a first semiconductor layer; a second semiconductor layer; an active layer; and a second electrode layer. The first electrode layer is of a stripe type extending from the second end toward the first end. A waveguide structure included in a first electric conductivity-type layer, the active layer, and a second electric conductivity-type layer includes a first waveguide path and a second waveguide path. The second waveguide path has a tapered structure for reducing the beam spot of light entering from the first waveguide path. The optical element includes a reflecting surface which is formed by an engraved structure extending from the first semiconductor layer to the active layer on at least one of the first end and the second end, and which reflects light entering from the first waveguide path or the second waveguide path.
