Title (EN) THERMAL TRANSFER PRINTING

Abstract:
(EN) A method and system are disclosed for thermal transfer printing onto selected regions of a surface of a substrate. The system comprises a transfer member having opposite front and rear sides with an imaging surface on the front side, a coating station at which a monolayer of particles made of, or coated with, a thermoplastic polymer is applied to the imaging surface, an imaging station at which energy in the form of electromagnetic (EM) radiation is applied via the rear side of the transfer member to selected regions of the particles coated imaging surface to render the particles thereon tacky within the selected regions, and a transfer station at which the imaging surface and the surface of the substrate are pressed against one another to cause transfer to the surface of the substrate of only the regions of the particle coating that have been rendered tacky. In the invention, the rear side of the transfer member is formed of a body transparent to the EM radiation, and an EM radiation absorbing layer made of an elastomeric silicone is provided on the front side of the transfer member adjoining the transparent body, the imaging surface being formed on, or as part of, the radiation absorbing layer.
(FR) L'invention concerne un procédé et un système d'impression par transfert thermique sur des régions sélectionnées d'une surface d'un substrat. Le système comprend un élément de transfert comportant des côtés avant et arrière opposés doté d'une surface d'imagerie du côté avant, un poste de revêtement au niveau duquel une monocouche de particules constituée d'un polymère thermoplastique, ou revêtue de ce dernier, est appliquée à la surface d'imagerie, un poste d'imagerie au niveau duquel de l'énergie sous la forme d'un rayonnement électromagnétique (EM) est appliquée par le biais du côté arrière de l'élément de transfert à des régions sélectionnées de la surface d'imagerie revêtue de particules pour rendre collantes les particules se trouvant sur cette dernière dans les régions sélectionnées, et un poste de transfert au niveau duquel la surface d'imagerie et la surface du substrat sont pressées l'une contre l'autre pour ne provoquer un transfert vers la surface du substrat que des régions du revêtement de particules qui ont été rendues collantes. Selon l'invention, le côté arrière de l'élément de transfert est formé d'un corps transparent au rayonnement EM, et une couche d'absorption de rayonnement EM constituée d'une silicone élastomère est disposée du côté avant de l'élément de transfert adjacent au corps transparent, la surface d'imagerie étant formée sur la couche d'absorption de rayonnement, ou faisant partie de cette dernière.
