The present invention pertains to: a negative electrode material that comprises nanosilicon, amorphous carbon, and graphite, and contains composite particles which have a 10% diameter (D10) of 3.5-9 μm in volume cumulative distribution and a BET specific surface area of 1-5 m2/g, and in which the ratio (A/B) of a peak area (A) derived from Si in the vicinity of 99 eV to a peak area (B) derived from silicon oxide in the vicinity of 103 eV, as observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), is 0.01-0.10, and in which nanosilicon-containing amorphous carbon is attached to the surface of graphite particles; and a lithium-ion battery using the negative electrode material. The negative electrode material according to the present invention has a high discharge capacity of 600 mAh/g or more, a high initial coulombic efficiency, and a high cycle characteristic, and thereby ensures improvement in the properties (initial coulombic efficiency and cycle characteristic) of a lithium-ion battery using this negative electrode material.
