Title: CARBON-FREE SMELTING OF HEMATITE ORE
Abstract:
Future hydrogen smelting of crushed hematite iron ore employing melt circulation technology is described with particular emphasis on energy conservation resulting from charging the crushed ore to multiple locations along the total length of the electrical conductively heated region of the ironmaking melt circulation loop so that temperature rises above the iron melting point are minimized to reduce heat losses to freeze linings throughout the entire melt circulation loop. Charge is preheated by eliminating water cooling in the continuous casting of the molten iron product. Liquid metal is used to capture the latent heat of solidification and the sensible heat associated with continuously casting refined iron slab. Cooling from above the melting point down to 1000°C by radiative heat transfer secures 800°C charge preheating, following initial convective heat transfer. The wustite containing thin melt layer floating on the circulating molten iron is reduced by hydrogen at atmospheric pressure.
