Disclosed are a red-emitting carbon dot having a high yield and quantum yield and a preparation method therefor, which is a preparation method allowing mass synthesis of carbon quantum dots emitting in the range of red lights (peak values between 610-661 nm) and having the current highest quantum dot yield of 76%. Such carbon nanoparticles are of sizes between 2-8 nm, consist primarily of a graphitized carbon nucleus and an amorphous functional group shell, and have great light emission efficiency, solubility, and stability in common solvents. As a novel red fluorescent material, the carbon dot has the great properties of inexpensive production costs, suitability for large-scale production, extremely high light emission efficiency, and great stability, is currently the most promising low toxicity novel nanomaterial as a replacement for a conventional semiconductor quantum dot for playing a role in optoelectronic components, fluorescent sensors, and biotechnology.
