The present invention addresses the problem of suppressing or preventing deterioration of a liquid crystal layer caused by local irradiation spots of a high energy light beam and deterioration of a nanocrystal for light emission. A liquid crystal display element which is provided with: a pair of substrates that are a first substrate (2) and a second substrate (7) arranged to face each other; a liquid crystal layer (5) that is held between the first substrate (2) and the second substrate (7); a pixel electrode that is provided on at least one of the first substrate (2) and the second substrate (7); a common electrode that is provided on at least one of the first substrate (2) and the second substrate (7); a color filter (6) that is configured from a black matrix and three primary color pixel parts of red (R), green (G) and blue (B); a light emitting element (L) that emits ultraviolet or visible light; and a light conversion part (103) that contains a nanocrystal for light emission, which converts the incident light from the light emitting element (L) to light of at least one color selected from among red (R), green (G) and blue (B) and emits the converted light. This liquid crystal display element is characterized in that the liquid crystal layer (5) contains 10-50% by weight of a compound that is represented by general formula (i).
