The present invention relates to the field of processors, and discloses a method and an enabling device for starting a physical device. The physical device comprises N central processing units (CPU) and at least one platform controller hub (PCH), N being a positive integer greater than or equal to 2. Each CPU within the N CPUs is electrically connected to the PCH. The method determines whether a fault occurs on a first CPU, the first CPU being the main CPU used for starting the physical device before the fault occurs on the first CPU; after it is determined that a fault occurs on the first CPU, determining a second CPU within the N CPUs to be the main CPU, and triggering the second CPU to start, by means of the cooperation with the first PCH as the role of the main CPU, the physical device; the first PCH being electrically connected to the second CPU, the first PCH being one of the at least one PCHs. When a fault occurs on the main CPU, the method can implement the switching of the main CPU, and start the physical device with a new main CPU.
