Disclosed is a method for determining four critical timings in an overall process (a workpiece feed start timing - idle pass - a cutting start timing - cutting - a cutting end timing - idle pass - a workpiece feed end timing) of a cutting step of a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. The method comprises: determining the workpiece feed start timing and end timing according to a real-time execution state of a CNC machining code; and determining the cutting start timing and end timing by means of real-time comparison between the input power of a machine spindle and an idle pass power. For a special cutting step where the power change in a workpiece feed process is not obvious, determination of cutting start and end timings is realized with reference to a historical statistical average of the idle moving duration and a workpiece feed timing point. Based on determination of the four timing points, acquisition of the cutting duration and two kinds of idle pass duration in the cutting step can be realized, thereby effectively solving the problem that the cutting timing of the CNC machine and the effective availability of a machine are difficult to accurately acquire.
