Claims

1. A seal assembly (300, 500) for use in a dynamic pin joint (200, 400) defining axial (A) and radial directions (R), the seal assembly (300, 500) comprising:

a counterface seal ring subassembly (302, 502) including:

a counterface seal ring member (306, 506) that includes a radially extending planar seal face (308, 508) and a first contoured load ring interface (310, 510); and

a first load ring (312, 512).

2. The seal assembly (300, 500) of claim 1 further comprising a lip seal ring subassembly (304, 504) including:

a lip seal ring member (314, 514) that includes a lip sealing feature (316, 516) and a second contoured load ring interface (318, 518); and

a second load ring (320, 520).

3. The seal assembly (300, 500) of claim 2 wherein the first load ring (312, 512) contacts the first contoured load ring interface (310, 510) and the second load ring (320, 520) contacts the second contoured load ring interface (318, 518).

4. The seal assembly (300, 500) of claim 2, wherein first load ring (312, 512) and second load ring (320, 520) are identically configured and the first contoured load ring interface (310, 510) and second contoured load ring interface (318, 518) are identically configured.

5. The seal assembly (300, 500) of claim 2, wherein the lip seal ring member (314, 514) is a flexible member having a Shore A hardness

ranging from 80-100 and the counterface seal ring member (306, 506) is a rigid member having a Rockwell C hardness ranging from 50-60.

6. The seal assembly (300, 500) of claim 5, wherein the lip seal ring member (314, 514) comprises a urethane, a polyurethane, a

thermoplastic or a rubber material, the counterface seal ring member (306, 506) comprises stainless steel or stellite and the load ring (312, 512) comprises a urethane, a polyurethane, a thermoplastic or a rubber material.

7. A pin joint (200, 400) for a machine (100) comprising: a pin (202, 402) defining an axial direction (A) and a radial direction (R);

a first member (204, 404) that defines a first seal groove (206, 406); a second member (208, 408) that defines a second seal groove (210, 410);

a seal assembly (300, 500) including:

a counterface seal ring subassembly (302, 502) disposed in the first seal groove (206, 406) of the first member (204, 404), the counterface seal ring subassembly (302, 502) including:

a counterface seal ring member (306, 506) that includes a radially extending planar seal face (308, 508) and a first contoured load ring interface (310, 510), and

a first load ring (312, 512); and

a lip seal ring subassembly (304, 504) disposed in the second seal groove (210, 410) of the second member (208, 408), the lip seal ring subassembly (304, 504) including:

a lip seal ring member (314, 514) that includes a lip sealing feature (316, 516) and a second contoured load ring interface (318, 518), and

a second load ring (320, 520);

wherein the first and second members (204, 404, 208, 408) rotate relative to each other and the first load ring (312, 512) engages the first contoured load ring interface (310, 510) of the counterface seal ring member (306, 506) and the second load ring (320, 520) engages the second contoured load ring interface (318, 518) of the lip seal ring member (314, 514).

8. The pin joint (200, 400) of claim 7, wherein the lip seal ring member is a flexible member having a Shore A hardness ranging from 80-100 and the counterface seal ring member is a rigid member is a rigid member having a Rockwell C hardness ranging from 50-60.

9. The pin joint (200, 400) of claim 7 wherein the lip seal ring member (314, 514) includes a substantially L-shaped body (322, 522) that that comprises an axially extending portion (324, 524) and a radially extending portion (326, 526).

The pin joint (200, 400) of claim 9 wherein the lip sealing feature (316, 516) of the lip seal ring member (314, 514) extends from the radially extending portion (326, 526) of the body (322, 522) of the lip seal ring member (314, 514), the counterface seal ring member (306, 506) includes a substantially L-shaped body (330, 530) that comprises an axially extending portion (332, 532) and a radially extending portion (334, 534); and the radially extending planar seal face (308, 508) is defined by the radially extending portion (334, 534) of the body (330, 530) of the counterface seal ring member (306, 506).
