CLAIMS

1. An electrochemical cell comprising:

a silicon-based anode; and

a liquid electrolyte solution comprising an organo-metallic hydride additive.

2. The electrochemical cell of claim 1, further comprising a cathode having an active material represented by the chemical structural formula:

LiNixMnyCozOw (ii)

where x + y + z = 1 and 0 < w < 3.

3. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 1 or 2, further comprising a cathode having an active material represented LiNio.33Mno.33Coo.33O2.

4. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein the organo-metallic hydride additive comprises a metalloid.

5. The electrochemical cell of claim 4 wherein the metalloid is boron.

6. The electrochemical cell of claim 5 wherein the organo-metallic hydride additive comprises sodium cyanoborohydride.

7. The electrochemical cell of claim 5 wherein the organo-metallic hydride additive comprises sodium tris(l,l,l,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropoxy)borohydride.

8. The electrochemical cell of claim 4 wherein the metalloid is silicon.

9. The electrochemical cell of claim 8 wherein the organo-metallic hydride additive comprises phenylsilane.

10. The electrochemical cell of claim 8 wherein the organo-metallic hydride additive comprises 10-undecenylsilane.

11. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 1 , 2, or 3 wherein the organo-metallic hydride additive comprises a post-transition metal.

12. The electrochemical cell of claim 11 wherein the post-transition metal is tin.

13. The electrochemical cell of claim 12 wherein the organo-metallic hydride additive comprises tributyl tin hydride.

14. An electrochemical cell comprising:

a silicon-based anode; and

a liquid electrolyte solution comprising a soluble additive wherein the additive is represented by the ch :

where Ri and R2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, substituted and unsubstituted C1-C20 alkyl groups, substituted and unsubstituted C1-C20 alkenyl groups, substituted and unsubstituted C1-C20 alkynyl groups, substituted and unsubstituted C5-C20 aryl groups, hydride groups, halo groups, hydroxy groups, thio groups, alkyl groups, alkenyl groups, alkynyl groups, aryl groups, iminyl groups, alkoxy groups, alkenoxy groups, alkynoxy groups, aryloxy groups, carboxy groups, alkylcarbonyloxy groups, alkenylcarbonyloxy groups, alkynylcarbonyloxy groups, arylcarbonyloxy groups, alkylthio groups, alkenylthio groups, alkynylthio groups, arylthio groups, cyano groups, N-substituted amino groups, alkylcarbonylamino groups, N-substituted alkylcarbonylamino groups, alkenylcarbonylamino groups, N-substituted alkenyl carbonylamino groups, alkynylcarbonyl amino groups, N-substituted alkynylcarbonylamino groups, arylcarbonylamino groups, N-substituted arylcarbonylamino groups, boron-containing groups, aluminum-containing groups, silicon-containing groups, phosphorus-containing groups, and sulfur-containing groups.

15. The electrochemical cell of claim 14 wherein Ri and R2 each comprises an unsubstituted alkyl group.

16. The electrochemical cell of claim 14 wherein Ri and R2 each comprises an unsubstituted alkenyl group.

17. The electrochemical cell of claim 14 wherein Ri and R2 each comprises an unsubstituted aryl group.

18. The electrochemical cell of claim 14 wherein the additive comprises diallyl dicarbonate.

19. The electrochemical cell of claim 14 wherein the additive comprises dimethyl dicarbonate.

20. The electrochemical cell of claim 14 wherein the additive comprises diethyl dicarbonate.

21. The electrochemical cell of claim 14 wherein the additive comprises dibenzyl dicarbonate.

22. The electrochemical cell of any one of claims 14 through 21, further comprising a cathode having an active material represented by the chemical structural formula:
