Abstract:
This liquid crystal display device is provided with a pair of polarizing plates, a liquid crystal display element provided between the pair of polarizing plates, and an optical compensation element provided between at least one polarizing plate of the pair of polarizing plates and the liquid crystal display element. Herein, this optical compensation element includes: an underlayer (332A) having a plurality of structures (332A1) each comprising a first surface (S1) and second surface (S2) having mutually different angles of inclination (e11, e12); and a laminated film (332B) that is formed over the underlayer (332A) and comprises a plurality of first and second refractive index films (332b1, 332b2) that are alternately layered on. An array period (A) of the plurality of the structures (332A1) in the underlayer (332A) is smaller than the wavelength of visible light.
