CLAIMS

1. A laryngoscope comprising a handle (1), a blade (2) and a light emitter (8) on the blade;

the blade having a tip end (24), a rear end (23) and a blade body (21) extending between the tip end and rear end, and the blade body having an underside (25) and an upper side (26) ;

the handle having a head (11), and the blade and handle being connected by a pivot connection (3) between the rear end of the blade and the head of the handle, whereby the blade is pivotable relative to the handle between an operating position and a folded position, and the rear end of the blade defining a power source housing (5) which houses a power source (10) for the light emitter.

2. A laryngoscope according to claim 1 in which the housing has a moveable cover (55) operable to open or close an opening through which the power source can be removed from the housing.

3. A laryngoscope according to claim 1 in which the housing has a housing wall and a moveable cover flap (55) hinged to the housing wall, operable to open or close an opening through which one or more batteries as said power source as can be removed from the housing.

4. A laryngoscope according to claim 3 in which the moveable cover flap (55) makes a cover catch engagement with the housing wall to hold it closed and, in the operating position of the blade, a portion of the head (11) of the handle opposes the cover catch engagement to prevent opening thereof.

5. A laryngoscope according to claim 1 in which

the rear end (23) of the blade comprises a rear end block formation (27) in which the power source housing is defined, and comprising a housing wall and a moveable cover ( 55) ,

the rear end block formation (27) has a bottom surface (271) and a rear surface, part of said cover (55) is comprised in the rear surface and part of said cover is comprised in the bottom surface, and

in the operating position, the bottom surface (271) is in opposition to an upward surface (15) of the handle head (11) .

6. A laryngoscope according to any one of claims 1 to 4 in which the rear end of the blade comprises a rear end block formation (27) in which the power source housing (5) is defined, and which also comprises one or more connector formations for the connection of the blade to the handle .

7. A laryngoscope according to claim 6 in which a said connector formation of the rear end block formation is a pivot pin ( 31 ) .

8. A laryngoscope according to claim 6 or claim 7 in which a said connector formation of the rear end block formation is a catch formation (41) and the handle head has a corresponding catch formation (42), said catch formations (41,42) together constituting a catch

mechanism engageable in the operating position of the blade to inhibit pivoting of the blade back to the folded pos ition .

9. A laryngoscope according to claim 6, 7 or 8 in which the handle head (11) has opposed laterally spaced upstanding supports (14) and the rear end block formation (27) of the blade fits between these supports.

10. A laryngoscope according to any one of the preceding claims in which the blade comprises electrical

connections (7) between the power source (10) and the light emitter (8) .

11. A laryngoscope according to claim 10 in which the blade comprises a switch (9) having an external movable switch actuator (91) which engages the handle head in the operating position to move the actuator (91) and switch on the light emitter.

12. A laryngoscope according to any one of the preceding claims in which the blade comprises a main blade body portion (21) and a discrete lighting module (22) fitted to the main blade body portion,

the lighting module (22) comprising the power source (10), the light emitter (8) and a module casing (6), and the module casing comprising

a power source housing portion (61) at least partially defining said power source housing (5), and

a connector surround (62) extending from the power source housing portion (61) towards the light emitter (8), and enclosing connectors (7) between the power source and the light emitter.

13. A laryngoscope blade having a tip end (24), a rear end (23) and a blade body (21) extending between the tip end and rear end, the blade body having an underside (25) and an upper side (26) ;

the blade comprising a rear end block formation (27) defining a power source housing (5) to contain a power source in the rear end of the blade, the power source housing (5) having a cover (55) which is openable for insertion or removal of a said power source;

the blade further comprising a light emitter (8) on the blade body, connections (7) between the power source housing and the light emitter, and a switch (9) having an actuator (91) to turn on the light emitter.

14. Laryngoscope blade of claim 13 having the further features of any of claims 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 12.

15. A laryngoscope comprising a handle (1) and a blade (2) pivotable relative to the handle between an operating position and a folded position;

the handle having a head (11) with opposed laterally spaced upstanding supports (14);

the blade comprising a rear end block (27) which fits between the upstanding supports (14) of the handle head and is connected thereto by a pivoted connection (3), and comprises a power source housing (5) containing a battery power source (10) in the rear end of the blade; said housing having a cover which is openable for removal of the power source in the folded position of the laryngoscope ;

a light emitter (8) on the blade;

lighting connections (7) between the power source and the light emitter, and wherein

the rear end block (27) of the blade comprises a switch (9) having an actuator (91) which engages the handle head (11) in the operating position of the laryngoscope to turn on the light emitter.

16. A laryngoscope according to claim 15 in which the moveable cover comprises a cover flap (55) which makes a cover catch engagement with a housing wall of the power source housing to hold it closed and which, in the operating position, is opposed by a portion (15) of the head of the handle to prevent disengagement thereof.

17. A laryngoscope according to claim 15 or 16 in which the blade comprises a main blade body portion (21) and a discrete lighting module (22) fitted to the main blade body portion,

the lighting module (22) comprising the power source (10), the light emitter (8) and a module casing (6), the module casing comprising

a power source housing portion (61) defining said power source housing (5), and

a connector stem (62) extending from the power source housing portion (61) and enclosing the lighting connections (7) between the power source

(10) and the light emitter (8) .

18. A laryngoscope comprising a handle (1), a blade (2) and a light emitter (8) on the blade;

the blade having a tip end (24), a rear end (23) and a blade body (21) extending between the tip end and rear end, and the blade body having an underside (25) and an upper side (26) ;

the handle having a head (11), and the blade and handle being connected by a pivot connection (3) between the rear end of the blade and the head of the handle, whereby the blade is pivotable relative to the handle between an operating position and a folded position;

the blade comprising a main blade body portion (21) and a discrete lighting module (22) fitted to the main blade body portion,

the discrete lighting module (22) comprising a power source (10), the light emitter (8) and a module casing (6), the module casing comprising a power source housing portion (61) defining a power source housing (5), and a connector stem (62) extending from the power source housing portion (61) to the light emitter (8) and enclosing lighting connections (7) between the power source (10) and the light emitter.

19. Ά laryngoscope according to claim 18 in which the discrete lighting module (22) comprises a switch

mechanism (9), and an external actuator (91) for the switch mechanism which engages the head of the handle in the operating position.

20. A laryngoscope according to claim 18 or 19 in which the rear end of the blade has a rear end block formation (27) which consists, in a lateral direction corresponding to the pivot axis of the pivot connection, partly of the power source housing portion (61) of the lighting module casing (6), and partly of a rear portion of the main blade body portion (21) .

21. A laryngoscope according to claim 20 in which the main blade body portion (2) comprises a pivot connector portion extending laterally across the power source housing (5) to make the pivot connection across the width of the blade rear end block formation.
